Dawn of Planet of the Apes, starring Keri Russell and Gary Oldman, hits theaters July 11, and ET is showing you how the movie team made the ape come to life!

In the film, humans are now the minority after a devastating virus was unleashed decades earlier, and their fragile peace with the genetically evolved apes led by Caesar (Andy Serkis) proves short-lived, as both sides must battle it out to determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

Andy Serkis brings his simian character to life through motion capture, and he shed some light on the process for ET.

"People assume the performance capture process is alienating to an actor who's playing a live action character," said Serkis. "But actually I think [the actors] forget after about five minutes once you got into looking at my face that has lots of dots all over it."

Co-star Jason Clarke agreed.

"The way Andy plays it makes that a whole lot easier to let you in and assume him and assume his responsibility," Clarke said.
