'Transformers' Tops Weak Fourth Of July Box Office

Paramount

While all films had disappointing returns this holiday weekend, 'Transformers' trounced all three newcomers.

Transformers: Age Of Extinction
managed to dominate the holiday box office, but only grossed $36.4 million in what turned out to be a very disappointing Fourth of July weekend for new movies.

Transformers
' domestic earnings amounted to a 63.6% drop from last weekend, and brought its U.S. gross to $174.7 million, based off a $210 million budget. However, the film has been simply obliterating the overseas markets, where it has already earned an additional $400.9 million for a staggering $575.6 million in worldwide sales.

The second and third place spots on the box office top 10 were home to two of the weekend's three newcomers, with the Melissa McCarthy comedy Tammy raking in $21.1 million and the Eric Bana-led horror film Deliver Us From Evil in a distant third with $9.5 million.

22 Jump Street
dropped two spots down to fourth and took in $9.4 million for a domestic total of $158.8 million, over three times its $50 million budget, meaning a 23 Jump Street is undoubtedly in the works.

How To Train Your Dragon 2
continued nipping at Jump Street's heels in fifth with $8.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $140 million, just shy of its $145 million budget but still far from the first film's final $217.5 million box office take.

The kid-centric sci-fi film Earth To Echo opened weaker than hoped, taking in $8.2 million and earning the sixth-place spot. The film had been compared to the 1982 family classic E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, which opened with $11.8 million ($32.7 million adjusted to modern box-office prices).

Disney's Maleficent dropped two spots down to seventh and took in $6.1 million, while Jersey Boys followed suit, dropping two spots to eight and earning $5.1 million.

Think Like A Man Too
took another hard hit dropping from fourth to ninth - and from first to fourth last weekend – earning $4.9 million. However, its decent first week earnings managed to keep it from being a bomb, and its domestic total is currently $57.1 million, over twice its $24 million budget.

dropped three spots from seventh to 10th, taking in $3.6 million and rounding out your box office top 10.
