People Think Steven Spielberg Killed A Dinosaur, And That's A Good Thing
Facebook user Jay Branscomb posted a picture of Steven Spielberg from the set of Jurassic Park this week, captioned: "Disgraceful photo of recreational hunter happily posing next to a Triceratops he just slaughtered. Please share so the world can name and shame this despicable man."
This post went viral and became kind of a big thing when some Facebook commenters took shockingly literal offense to the picture:
And then other Facebook commenters proceeded to get pretty upset about the people who didn't get it:
Now, this is the kind of story that makes you want to call your nearest school district superintendent in tears, crying "HOW CAN I HELP?!" And that's fair, you should probably do that. But there's one thing you should think about before you do.
These Facebook commenters -- they care about things. Sure, that compassion may manifest itself in the form of decrying the slaughter of a long extinct species, but hey, at least their heart is in the right place.
It is possible to relate to the idea that, if the Triceratops did still exist, Steven Spielberg posing next to the fallen beast while smiling from ear to ear would be a pretty messed up thing to do. And presumably these commenters' convictions toward long fossilized creatures extends to real endangered species who are actually in trouble today.
Point is, they might be 66 million years late to the party, but it's still somewhat cool that they showed up.
Of course, some astute commenters suggested that the joke may have been the rest of us all along:
Takeaway: There was a big misunderstanding on the Internet about Steven Spielberg hunting dinosaurs this week, and everyone's going to be fine.
