Anatomy of a Summer Blockbuster

In the wake of the massive openings for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: Age of Extinction, ET is breaking down what makes a summer blockbuster.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes finished No. 1 this weekend at the box office with $73 million. That adds some much needed heat to the summer box office which has been lagging so far. The other success story is Transformers: Age of Extinction which finished second this weekend and crossed the $200 Million mark. So why are these two movies doing so well when the others aren't?

Both films combine two important elements: big stars and big action.
