This weekend at the box office, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took the No. 1 spot over Guardians of the Galaxy and a surprisingly low-performing The Expendables 3.
With a weekend gross of $28.4 million, the pizza-loving and crime-fighting turtles are making the movie one of the most-seen of the summer. Released on August 8, the film has already projected $117.6 million in ticket sales.
Coming in a close second, Guardians of the Galaxy was at $24.7 this weekend, which means Chris Pratt is still making ladies swoon. This movie is at a domestic total of $222.2 million after its release on August 1. It had the top opening weekend so far this month.
Third place goes to new release Let's Be Cops with a weekend estimate of $17.7 million. New Girls stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. are making audiences laugh with their fake police badges.
Perhaps the most surprising film this week to take fourth place was The Expendables 3 which only grossed $16.2 million.
According to Variety, piracy may be to blame. "Studio executives privately pointed the finger at a leaked copy of the film that hit the internet three weeks before its debut and was seen by 2.2 million people," the trade publication reports. With its all-star cast including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford and Wesley Snipes (to name a few), this box-office ticket sales number for the sequel is disappointing. The first Expendables opened in 2010 with $35 million.
Rounding off the top five, The Giver is not just the book people read in high school but a movie that is opening with $12.7 million this weekend. Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift and Brandon Thwaites are all in this movie adaptation about a boy who learns from an elderly man about the real world.
Here are five more films that made the top 10 list but all performed under $10 million this weekend:
6. Into the Storm at $7.7 million
7. The Hundred-Foot Journey at $7.1 million
8. Lucy at $5.3 million
9. Step Up All In at $2.7 million
10. Boyhood at $2.1 million
