Brittany Murphy’s untimely death in 2009 at just 32 years old shocked and saddened fans everywhere. While the late actress was known for her bubbly personality, there was a side to the star that many didn’t see.
This Saturday, September 6, Lifetime will air a biopic on the star following her rise to fame in Clueless, her tragic death, and her personal demons.
ET spoke with Last Man Standing’s Amanda Fuller, who plays Brittany, and Twin Peaks star Sherilyn Fenn, who plays Brittany’s mother Sharon. The film is already causing quite a stir, with Brittany’s father Angelo telling the Examiner, “The Brittany Murphy Story is an affront to everything my daughter was in real life. It’s hideous, unauthorized, and completely untrue.”
While neither parent was consulted in the making of the film, Fuller and Fenn told ET, “we did everything based on public record” and are opting not to focus on the unpleasant buzz.
“How people choose to perceive it, interpret it, that's their business,” Fuller said.
It was Murphy’s personal battles with her weight in Hollywood that really hit home for Amanda.
“When I read the script, I was like, ‘Oh, I've been there,’” the 30-year-old told ET. “I know exactly what this is, the body image issues, the negative press attention, like, I have totally lived this.”
But the film isn’t only about telling the dark side of fame that Brittany experienced. The Last Man Standing actress admitted that the biopic also celebrates the late actress’ memory in a beautiful way.
“I think our intent the entire time was to expose her passion for her work, their relationship and how beautiful that was,” Fuller admitted, speaking of Murphy’s relationship with mother Sharon. “Then how the media and the world and kind of this industry what it does to you.”
The Brittany Murphy Story airs Saturday, September 6, at 8/7C.
