The comedy will be the third film in the Bridget Jones franchise after the first two earned a combined $542 million worldwide.

This will mark Dempsey's first feature film since 2011's Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

While not much is known about the plot of the movie, the story is reportedly based on columns written by "Bridget Jones" creator Helen Fielding.

Dempsey (a.k.a. Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd) said goodbye to Grey's Anatomy earlier this year when he was dramatically killed off after an 11-season run. In the episode, Derek was rushed to the hospital after getting hit by a semi-truck. Although he was alive and breathing when he arrived, the improperly-trained doctors at the hospital ultimately cost him his life, and Derek's wife, Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), was left with the difficult choice to take her husband off life support.

ABC issued a statement following the episode, explaining that Dempsey was leaving the show "to pursue other interests."
