When you have an all-star cast and most of them are your close friends, you're Seth Rogen. The funnyman makes his directorial debut with the new apocalyptic comedy This Is the End and we were at the film's premiere last night in Los Angeles, where the Superbad star revealed that making the outrageous comedy was just as much fun as it appears.
"It was really fun, honestly. It was enjoyable. I think it made it a lot easier to dive into it having such a nice comfort level with everyone. They [friends] trust us," Rogen says of working with so many friends on set.
And when asked whether being tight-knit pals with the majority of the cast was a hindrance or a help when it came to putting on his director's hat, a grinning Rogen said, "Definitely, you have to listen to the director."
While Rogen remains tight-lipped about the on-set follies, Jay Baruchel, who comes back for laughs after starring with Rogen in Knocked Up, recollects a little bit of a different story.
"It was insane. Seth and Evan [Goldberg] had the very unenviable task of wrangling all of us -- not unlike a daycare teacher. But it was a great place to show up to work everyday."
"I don't think I ever laughed so hard in my life over the three-day period. They're funny off-camera, on-camera, all the time. It was just a joy," said Harry Potter alum Emma Watson, who makes her comedic debut playing herself.
"Seth is an incredibly smart guy and a great director," said Paul Rudd, who emphasized that when it comes to directing, Rogen is a minimalist, but it's because he trusts his actors to have fun and get the job done.
The cast list for the end-of-the-world flick reads like a reunion of Knocked Up meets Pineapple Express -- with a couple of high-profile personalities thrown in for good measure. The film also includes appearances from stars including James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Paul Rudd, Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Rihanna, Channing Tatum, Mindy Kaling, and Hot Tub Time Machine’s Craig Robinson.
The doomsday movie plays off the exaggerated stereotypes of celebrities and has a bunch of them playing extreme versions of themselves during a party at Franco's house in Hollywood. The result is a lot of chaos, out-of-control egos and terrible, terrible things happening to some of the hottest and hippest people in Hollywood.
Friends aside, when asked how Rogen was able to get some of the other big names to headline his movie, such as Rihanna, he said he simply asked.
"We heard that she was a fan of our movies and so when we were putting together a list of people she [Rihanna] was someone that we thought we should ask and she said yes. And then she came and died a horrible death for us... it was awesome."
