Matthew McConaughey goes behind the camera! Directing the new music video for country crooner Jamey Johnson's song "Playing the Part," the actor gets into some monkey business.

The video follows around a person dressed in a gorilla suit after he gets fired from his job as a sign holder. The sad monkey wanders about Los Angeles, running into peculiar people along the way.

This is the first music video directed by McConaughey and the first video off Johnson's chart-topping double album The Guitar Song.

"Jamey and this song both have a great sense of humor, so I wanted the video to have a 'wink' to it," says McConaughey. "For any video, if you like the song, you should like it even more after you see the video. I wanted this video to support the lyrics, and elevate the song."

McConaughey explained how he came up with the idea, saying, "I had a few initial ideas, but after Jamey and I talked about why he wrote it and where the song came from, it was clear that I needed a man in a monkey suit."

Jamey said of the turnout of the "carneys" video, "I don't think I could have dreamed anything better." McConaughey met the country singer during the 2009 Country Music Association Awards in Nashville where Johnson received the Song of the Year award for "In Color." Months later, the actor's girlfriend Camila Alves secretly asked Johnson to perform at McConaughey's 40th birthday party, and he agreed. From there, Johnson completed his album and asked McConaughey to direct a video for him.

Johnson is currently on tour and will perform on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Tuesday, October 26.
