Cyndi Lauper's Star-Studded Broadway Debut
April 05, 2013
ET was front-and-center with Cyndi Lauper and other stars at the premiere of her new Broadway musical Kinky Boots!
The show -- based on an obscure British comedy film of the same name -- follows an unlikely partnership between a struggling shoe factory owner (Stark Sands) and a flamboyant drag queen named Lola (Billy Porter). A fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos, Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he's meant to be.
"I think it's going to be fun," Lauper said on the red carpet of the Kinky Boots premiere last night in New York. "I can't wait to just have a little fun and it's great to see friends. I started crying -- everything fell apart, I had to go put it back... I'm a painting," joked the singer, who created the show's music and lyrics.
Harvey Fierstein -- the writer who collaborated with Lauper on Kinky Boots -- said that despite being involved in countless Broadway productions in the past, this time he felt "a different feeling" about the show. "The audiences walk out of here -- just float out of the theater -- because they are so happy," he explained. "But it also has to do with who the cast is... all these people have done like 20 Broadway shows each."
