Lady Gaga to Open VMAs with Debut of 'Applause'

Lady Gaga is set to open the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday with a world premiere performance of her new single Applause, the music network announced Monday.

Gaga's performance of the single off her highly anticipated album ARTPOP will kick off the show that will also include performances by Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.

Gaga, who will be performing live for the first since undergoing hip surgery in February -- is of course no stranger to the VMA stage. At previous VMAs, she's performed unforgettable renditions of her hits including a blood-soaked performance of Paparazzi in 2009, as well as her gender bending You & I routine in 2011, when she performed as her alter ego "Jo Calderone."

The MTV Video Music Awards -- broadcast live from Brooklyn's Barclays Center in New York City -- airs this Sunday night at 9 ET/PT, on MTV.
