Tegan & Sara Talk 'Closer', Katy Perry & New Music

By

Tegan and Sara have been rocking crowds since 1999. Seven studio albums later and they are enjoying the biggest successes of their career.

On the heels of being invited to perform with Taylor Swift at one of her Staples Center shows last month, I caught up with the Canadian sisters on the eve of their performance at the We Can Survive Benefit Concert in LA alongside Katy Perry, Ellie Goulding, Sara Bareilles, and Kacey Musgraves. The all-female bill was handpicked by Ms. Perry herself.

"It's just surreal for us," Sara says. "Sometimes when people like Katy Perry or Taylor Swift know who you are or they are generous and offer you an opportunity to perform with them it really makes you stop and think... 'Holy cow!'"

The Canadian sisters have been on a rampage since the release of their most recent album, Heartthrob earlier this year and they haven't let up since! Closer, the first single off the record, has broken into the top 20 on the Top 40 radio chart. This milestone marks the first time the duo has had a song chart at pop radio.

"Top 40 is sort of that beast," Sara admits. "You only go there if you're really ready and we felt Closer was ready for it."

Tegan and Sara, who recently wrapped a North American tour with Fun. will next embark on a string of international dates through December. Showing no signs of slowing down, they also just released a brand new track entitled Shudder to Think as part of the soundtrack for Dallas Buyer's Club.
