Kenny Rogers Says Lionel Richie Wrote 'Lady' on the Toilet

TMI? Kenny Rogers took TODAY show contributing correspondent Jenna Bush Hager waaayy behind the music when he revealed the real story behind his Lady song, written by Lionel Richie.

On Thursday's morning show, the 75-year-old country crooner revealed that Richie wrote the hit 1980 track on the toilet! He said the 65-year-old singer/songwriter went to the restroom, and came back with Lady lyrics, possibly on pieces of toilet paper.

"Lionel doesn't write entire songs, he writes ideas," Rogers revealed of the music legend.

"We were in the studio recording the song, and I said, 'Where's the second verse?' and they said, 'Lionel's in the toilet writing them right now.'"

The country-music icon added of his old friend, "He can't write unless he has the pressure to write. ...He went in there to kinda get away from everything and to focus."

Richie's bathroom break proved successful as Lady is still one of Rogers' biggest hits. The song reached No. 1 on three charts in 1980, including six weeks on the Hot 100 and one week on the Hot Country Singles chart.

Rogers -- who has 24 No. 1 songs, 12 No. 1 albums and has sold 120 million records -- is being honored at the Country Music Hall of Fame with an exhibit dedicated to his decades in music. It's called Kenny Rogers: Through the Years.
