In 2013, the Jonas Brothers unexpectedly broke up just before the release of a new album and the start of a world tour. Despite the split, the brothers are now on good terms, according to Kevin Jonas.

In an interview with HuffPost Live on Tuesday, the 27-year-old musician explained that breaking up allowed him and his brothers to save their relationship. The conversation begins around the 11-minute mark in the video below.

"I think that’s why we’re close now, because we’re not in the band," Kevin said. "We chose to be a family, not a band."

Kevin also explained what caused the tension within their band in the first place.

"At the end there, the friction was too much," the 27-year-old musician revealed. "We just really needed to break away and kind of do our own things for some time."

"Now tell us how the drugs tore you apart," the acerbic comedian joked.
