Christina Aguilera was arrested under "protective custody welfare circumstances" early Tuesday morning in West Hollywood "for her own safety" due to intoxication, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
The Sheriff's Department tells ET that deputies conducted a traffic stop at 2:45 a.m. regarding a drunk driving investigation. The Grammy winner was a passenger in the vehicle that her boyfriend Matthew Rutler was determined to be driving. Rutler was arrested for driving under the influence and was booked (see above photo); Aguilera was taken into custody for her own safety because she was intoxicated and nobody else could take care of her. The officers brought her in until she sobered up. She was released at approximately 7:30 a.m. Rutler was eventually released as well.
The Sheriff's Department described the star as "cooperative and not belligerent whatsoever," said she was booked and fingerprinted and will have a record of a public intoxication misdemeanor, but "we have no desire to prosecute."
Even though a mugshot of Aguilera surfaced on the Internet, the Sheriff's Department said the photo did not originate from its office. "It was surreptitiously obtained. We are not releasing it," spokesman Steve Whitmore told ET.
Aguilera made headlines after she flubbed some lines while singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl, then approximately a week later she tripped on the Grammy stage following a performance.
