President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky began a sexual relationship in November 1995, according to audiotapes secretly recorded later by Linda Tripp, a confidante of Lewinsky. After news of the relationship broke, Clinton denied the affair, including his now famous response: "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky." U.S. legislators initiated impeachment proceedings against Clinton for alleged obstruction of justice and perjury, but he was eventually acquitted of all charges and remained in office.
