Clinton Global Initiative Tackles Maternal Health

Chelsea Clinton and Christy Turlington Burns spoke at The George Washington University on Tuesday, kicking off GW Phones for Hope -- a drive to fund mobile health technology projects in developing countries.

The Clinton Global Initiative, founded by Chelsea's father, former President Bill Clinton, is joining forces with GWU in achieving empirical goals towards finding a solution for child and maternal health issues around the globe.

One of those goals is to collect 20,000 used cell phones by March 2012 for these phones to be recycled and used to generate new phones to be used in the field.

"The best way to address child survival is to invest in a mom," said Christy, who revealed that she suffered complications from giving birth to her daughter, Grace, eight years ago. "Our campaign is designed around using that angle of dealing with the health of the family through the mom when it's the most important time in her life, perhaps."

Christy is the founder of Every Mother Counts, an advocacy campaign to increase support for child health.

Chelsea explained the Clinton Global Initiative's unique and effective approach to charity. The former first daughter said that those involved with CGI make a commitment that is specific and measurable, like a goal to collect 20,000 used cell phones, so as to keep each other accountable.
