This year’s sleeper hit, The Artist, won best picture and three other top awards at the Spirit Awards honoring independent film on Saturday night.
The silent film also won for the award for best director for Michel Hazanavicius and lead actor for Jean Dujardin. The film, about as a silent-era film star (Dujardin) whose career fades as talkies take over, also earned the cinematography award for Guillaume Schiffman.
Michelle Williams won best actress as Marilyn Monroe for the film My Week with Marilyn.
Christopher Plummer won the supporting actor award for his role in Beginners, while Shailene Woodley took home her award for her role as an angst-ridden teen in The Descendants.
