Katie Couric to Return to Morning TV
March 29, 2012
Katie Couric will return to the breakfast hour next week to host Good Morning America with George Stephanopoulos.
Couric -- no stranger to morning shows after co-hosting NBC's Today for 15 years -- will be filling in beginning next Monday for GMA co-host Robin Roberts, who will be on vacation for the week.
"Serious pressure filling in for the fab @RobinRoberts!" Couric tweeted on Thursday about the gig. "Rise + shine! Excited to be back on morning TV next wk, guest hosting @GMA w/ @GStephanopoulos."
A source tells Fox News that staffers at the Today show were shocked at the news and will be scrambling to counter an expected spike in the ratings for GMA during Couric's hosting duties next week. "There were a lot of jaws dropping all over the place," a staffer at Today told Fox. "Then there was a lot of sniping."
The source added that Today producers will be stepping up attempts to maintain winning ratings next week by trying to book as many high-profile guests as possible to keep morning viewers tuned to NBC.
Couric left Today in 2006 to anchor the CBS Evening News, but she left that job last year when her contract expired. She then signed a record $40 million deal with ABC as a contributor to various news programs and is set to launch her own syndicated talk show in September.
