Following in the footsteps of her Grey's Anatomy creations, Shonda Rhimes reveals that she recently added a daughter to her happy family via domestic adoption.

'Grey's' Shocker: Mer-Der Adopts!

In February Rhimes welcomed baby Emerson Pearl to her home, telling US Weekly that despite weaving adoption themes into her work over the years, the arrival of her little one was a secret shocked many cast and crew members at her hit shows, Scandal, Grey's, and Private Practice.

"I've been writing adoption into story lines on my shows and only a few people close to me knew about my plans," says Rhimes. "I think the response was 'oh my goodness' from a lot of people."

Emerson will make Rhimes' first adopted daughter, Harper, a big sister.
