Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is the latest celebrity to voice her approval for President Barack Obama's support of same-sex marriage.
In an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show set to air Thursday, the openly gay star lends an emotional thank you to our commander in chief who, on Wednesday, revealed that he personally supports the legalization of same-sex marriage—the first of any sitting American president.
"What an amazing day for our country. President Obama just came out in support of same sex marriage," Ellen begins as her studio audience stands and cheers. "There have been moments in history when someone has had the courage to stand up for what they believe in and that one action changes everything. I hope that this is one of those times. It takes a brave man to take a stand like this especially in an election year. Mr. President, to you, I say, thank you, very, very much."
President Barack Obama's ground-breaking statements were aired in an interview snippet with ABC News' Robin Roberts Wednesday, in which he explains that his new stance is the result of what he referred to as an "evolution" in his thought process.
"I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together," the president said. "When I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."
ABC's Good Morning America will air the full interview on Thursday.
