James Holmes made his first court appearance -- and his first national TV appearance -- since last week's shooting massacre in Aurora, CO during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises.

Dressed in a maroon jumpsuit, his hair colored red and orange in a similar fashion to Batman's nemesis The Joker -- whom Holmes claimed to be to police -- the 24-year-old neuroscience student showed little emotion and appeared to be dazed and not entirely lucid as charges were read in court.

Holmes' is the prime suspect in the Thursday night movie theater rampage that left 12 people dead, with 71 people shot and at least 58 wounded, including a three-month-old, according to CNN.

Authorities say Holmes, who is being held in solitary confinement, is refusing to cooperate and it could take months to find out what prompted the horrific attack, reports the AP.

Holmes will be formally charged next Monday, July 30. He likely faces charges of first-degree murder, an offense that carries a possible death penalty if he is convicted.
