The talk of the London 2012 Olympics is whether Michael Phelps will break a longstanding record of the most amount of medals won by an individual athlete. He just had the chance to go for #19. Did he succeed?
In the men's 4x200m free relay, Phelps' teammates gave Team USA a lead by a wide margin before the most decorated athlete even jumped in the pool for the final leg. He maintained the lead and brought home the win. This historic title serves as his 15th gold medal and 19th medal of any color over the course of his illustrious Olympic career.
Phelps' mom and sisters were in their normal perch in the stands to share this special moment. A record of 18 medals has been held by Russian gymnast Larissa Latynina since 1964. Phelps tied that feat earlier today by taking silver in the men's 200m fly.
