Jolie, who serves as a United Nations Special Envoy, sat down with the refugees -- some with visible wounds -- on Tuesday shortly after they had crossed into Jordan from violence-wracked Syria.

Ongoing shelling could be heard from across the border where the meeting took place and the actress said she was very concerned after speaking with the refugees, who recounted "horrific" and "heartbreaking" accounts of the deteriorating situation in Syria.
The Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan hosts about 30,000 Syrians displaced by an 18-month conflict that has so far claimed an estimated 23,000 lives.
