November 12, 2012
The iconic dress worn by Judy Garland in her role as Dorothy in the 1939 film classic The Wizard of Oz has sold at auction for $480,000.
Julien's Auctions did not reveal the buyer of the blue gingham dress at its auction held over the weekend in Beverly Hills. The dress fetched the highest price of any item sold during the auction house's two-day sale of entertainment memorabilia.
The Wizard of Oz fans can get ahold of a virtual version of Dorothy's dress from November 13-27 in the official The Wizard of Oz Facebook game. After the 27th, the in-game dress will be sold for an undetermined amount.
Among other top sellers at Julien's Auctions were a racing jacket worn by Steve McQueen that brought in $50,000, a Jaclyn Smith dress from the classic TV series Charlie Angel's that sold for $15,000, and the Julie Andrews The Sound of Music dress, which fetched $38,400, according to Julien's.
In addition, a purple skirt worn by Marilyn Monroe while filming River of No Return sold for a whopping $50,000, while the pair of sunglasses worn by John Belushi in The Blues Brothers sold for $16,640.
