"It's amazing -- there's a knight, there's a famine hero who was incredible, and it's just an extraordinary lineage," said Tom of his newly discovered family tree. "I can't wait to come back and I want to visit the land of my ancestors and the castle that they have and then it went all the way back to the tenth century basically."

Tom, who played an Irishman looking to move to America in Ron Howard's Far and Away back in 1992, was officially presented with a Certificate of Irish Heritage by Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister, Eamon Gilmore.

"It's wonderful," said Tom. "A great honor for me and I think for my whole family. I can't wait to bring it back to them and also enlighten them on their history."
