Although her son currently lives in Boston for college, she revealed that he happened to be visiting New York for the weekend. She stated that it was hard for her to fathom the terror that the loved ones of Bostonians went through in the hours that followed the bombings.

"I can't imagine the mothers calling...trying to reach their kids," the Modern Family actress said. "I can't imagine the panic and the fear and the horrible feeling. It's insane that a human being can cause so much pain to other human beings."

Vergara sat down with ET primarily to discuss "Follow the Script", a health campaign that was inspired by a scare of her own that she suffered a dozen years ago.

At the age of 28, the Colombian national was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and subsequently had her thyroid removed. Having dealt with hypothyroidism for years, Vergara wants to spread awareness about the disease and help demystify it.

"I realized...how many women and...men...have a problem with [their thyroids] without even knowing their quality of life," she said. "It's so bad because they haven't even been diagnosed and they don't realize...how easy...it is to be diagnosed and take over this medical problem."

Now 40, Vergara is awaiting her second marriage and potential additions to her family in the near future. She confirmed that she has decided to have her eggs frozen in order to preserve the certainty of having children with her main squeeze Nick Loeb.
