Veteran Actor Ed Lauter Dies

Ed Lauter, the veteran character actor best known recently for playing Peppy's (Berenice Bejo) butler in 2011's The Artist and hundreds of other films and televisions shows, has passed away.

Lauter died Wednesday, Oct. 16, in his home after battling mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, CNN reports. He was 74.

Lauter's career spanned four decades, and included memorable roles in films like The Longest Yard, Mulholland Falls, Trouble With The Curve, Not Another Teen Movie and Leaving Las Vegas.

Along with his film roles, he had TV parts on ER, Shameless, Psych, CSI and The X-Files.
