Clay Aiken was the runner-up on American Idol in 2003, but can he win a seat in Congress next election? He plans to try.
Aiken, 35, announced on his website on Wednesday, Feb. 5, that he will run for Congress in North Carolina to take 2nd Congressional District Republican Renee Ellmers' seat. "I'm running for Congress for the same reason I chose to become a special education teacher years ago -- to help people in need and to give them a voice. Will you join me?" he asks.
The New York Times
points out that the Second District is "overwhelmingly Republican." In the video, the Idol
alum focuses on his difficult upbringing, and his work with autistic children.
Would you vote for Aiken to have a seat in the House?
