Legendary Formula One racing driver Michael Schumacher has reportedly come out of his months-long coma and has left the hospital, according to BBC News.

Schumacher, 45, suffered a serious head injury in December 2013 while skiing in the French Alps, and has spent the last five months in a medically-induced coma. Doctors kept him in a coma to reduce brain swelling, which would have led to irreparable damage.

Schumacher has been moved from the hospital's intensive care unit to a private rehabilitation center for the beginning of what it likely to be a very long road to recovery.

"For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye," said Sabine Kehm, Schumacher's manager, in a press statement. The location of Schumacher's private rehabilitation center has not been disclosed.

Schumacher retired from auto-racing in 2012 after winning seven Formula One championships over his 19 year career, more than any other F1 driver in the sport's history.

It's unclear how long Schumacher's physical rehabilitation will take, or if it is possible for him to make a full recovery.
