The cult classic Heathers is now a musical, so we're breaking down why the movie was so popular using throwback interviews with stars Christian Slater and Winona Ryder.

The 1988 film could be thought of as the original Mean Girls. In the movie, Christian and Winona's characters wreak havoc on the high school cliques that have treated them so poorly.

"I guess it's kind of a revenge for the nerds type of movie," Slater told us in 1989. "I had a very good time doing that."

"My agent at the time begged me not to do Heathers," said Ryder. "She said it would ruin my career and I would never work again."
