It is truly a devastating day for Hollywood.
Immediately after news broke that Robin Williams was found dead in his home at the age of 63 of an apparent suicide, colleagues, friends and admirers took to Twitter to share their memories of the talented Oscar winner.
The actor and comedian's career spanned from the classic TV spinoff Mork & Mindy to the unforgettable Mrs. Doubtfire to an award-winning role in Good Will Hunting to the animated voice work of everyone's favorite genie in Aladdin. In one way or another, his work touched the life of just about everybody. The below tweets are just a few of those expressing sadness, shock and admiration.
Matt Damon (via Us Weekly): "Robin brought so much joy into my life and I will carry that joy with me forever. He was such a beautiful man. I was lucky to know him and I will never, ever forget him."
Ben Affleck: "Robin had a ton of love in him. He personally did so much for so many people. He made Matt and my dreams come true. What do you owe a guy who does that? Everything."
Joan Rivers: "I'm terribly saddened. He was an amazing talent and a very kind and giving man. Everyone remembers him as a brilliant comedian but he was much more than that. He was an extraordinary actor and very generous in spirit. I cannot remember a time that we were together that he didn't make me genuinely laugh. He was one of the nice guys. I wish I had been closer to tell him what I learned the hard way...that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary unhappiness. I really really liked him . It makes me very very sad."
Sally Field: "I feel stunned and so sad about Robin. I'm sad for the world of comedy. And so very sad for his family. And I'm sad for Robin. He always lit up when he was able to make people laugh, and he made them laugh his whole life long.... tirelessly. He was one of a kind. There will not be another. Please God, let him now rest in peace."
Chevy Chase: "Robin and I were great friends, suffering from the same little-known disease: depression. I never could have expected this ending to his life, and to ours with him. God bless him and God bless us all for his LIFE! I cannot believe this. I am overwhelmed with grief. What a wonderful man/boy and what a tremendous talent in the most important art of any time – comedy! I loved him."
Jessica Chastain (via WhoSay): "Robin Williams changed my life. He was a great actor and a generous person. Through a scholarship, he made it possible for me to graduate college. His generous spirit will forever inspire me to support others as he supported me. He will forever be missed."
Ben Affleck (via Facebook): "Heartbroken. Thanks chief - for your friendship and for what you gave the world. Robin had a ton of love in him. He personally did so much for so many people. He made Matt and my dreams come true. What do you owe a guy who does that? Everything. May you find peace my friend."
Jada Pinkett Smith (via Facebook): "An unarmed Michael Brown shot dead in the street by cops two days before leaving for college, and Robin Williams took his life. It's real out here and so is all the pain that comes with it. May they both rest in peace."
