Joan Rivers Placed in Medically Induced Coma Following Routine Surgery

As of Friday, Joan Rivers remains hospitalized in New York City. Her daughter Melissa shared that the 81-year-old comedy legend was "resting comfortably."

Sources close to Joan tell ET that the funnylady known for her acerbic wit is in a medically induced coma following a routine endoscopy. Not long after the procedure started, she stopped breathing and was then rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Joan's daughter Melissa Rivers flew to New York from Los Angeles Thursday, saying after she landed, "I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."

Just Wednesday the funny lady was making the rounds at New York City-based magazines to promote her new book Diary of a Mad Woman. She also filmed Fashion Police earlier this week appearing perfectly healthy and on her game.
