Jesse Helt's week didn't end as well as it began. He took the stage at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards as Miley Cyrus' date on Sunday, but by Thursday night he had turned himself in to authorities at Polk County Jail in Dallas, Oregon.

The 22-year-old had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for probation violation and was booked around 8:30 p.m. Pacific. His bail was set at $25,000 and he put up $2,500 of that after being in jail for about an hour.

"He came into jail with that on him," Sheriff Bob Wolfe said (via USA Today).

Helt is expected to appear in court in two weeks. Will Miley be his date?

At the awards show on Sunday, Helt accepted the 21-year-old singer's VMA and used the opportunity to talk about My Friend's Place, a shelter for homeless youths in Los Angeles.

Little did the audience know at the time, but Helt had warrants for his arrest in Oregon dating back to Nov. 2010. According to eCourts, he owes the county more than $2,000.

That all being said, Miley responded to Helt's arrest beautifully earlier this week, tweeting in part: "Does looking down upon the homeless help people excuse their inaction?" Check out Helt's VMA speech, below:
