On Sunday, ET learned that close friends trying to see Joan Rivers are being turned away.
Jay Redack, a Hollywood writer who wrote the 1978 film Rabbit Test, directed by Joan and produced by her late husband Edgar, attempted to visit Joan at Mt. Sinai. He went into the security office and was met by a hospital staffer, but he wasn't allowed to come up.
Jay Redack tells ET, "I came to see Melissa and whoever was here. Evidently the family is trying to rest and they're keeping her very quiet without any visitors right now. I saw her the night before this happened. She was in terrific spirits, happy and nothing but laughter and updates on what's going on between the two of us. She said she was getting a small procedure on her throat or vocal cord. It was bothering her a bit. She was a bit raspy. Her surgery was at 9:30 and she would be out and resume the rest of her day. I walked her home around 11:30."
Jay also said that he was not told about her condition and that "nobody is stronger."
A hospital staffer was overheard telling Jay, "Melissa knows you were here and extends her appreciation. They just want her to have quiet, she's had a lot of visitors. The last thing we want is for Miss Rivers to get an infection. One of her last visitors, and I won't tell you who, was on antibiotics. She's stable."
Melissa Rivers shared an update on her mother Sunday saying, "Thank you for your continued love and support. We are keeping our fingers crossed."
Melissa last updated Joan Rivers' fans on her condition Friday, which she says "remains serious."
"My mother would be so touched by the tributes and prayers that we have received from around the world. Her condition remains serious but she is receiving the best treatment and care possible," Melissa, 46, said in a statement to ET. "We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts as we pray for her recovery."
Sources close to Joan tell ET that the Fashion Police judge, 81, is in a medically induced coma following a routine endoscopy. Not long after the procedure started, she stopped breathing and was then rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital.
"This morning, Joan Rivers was taken to The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she is being attended to," a spokesperson for the hospital confirmed Thursday. "Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available."
Melissa and her son Cooper flew to New York from Los Angeles Thursday, saying after she landed, "I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."
