After doctors started the process of bringing Joan Rivers out of a medically induced coma Sunday, a family source tells ET that her daughter Melissa Rivers, 46, is only looking at one outcome -- that Joan will eventually come out of this.
"There is only one outlook Melissa is looking at now -- She's like, 'When my mother wakes up…,' 'When my mother see this and that …' There is only one trajectory she sees this going in the direction of, which is positive," a family source tells ET exclusively. "She refuses to acknowledge any other outcome than Joan coming out of this.”
Joan, 81, is currently unconscious, and the family doesn't expect to know much more about her condition until midweek, as the process of bringing her out of a medically induced coma is a very slow one. The family is waiting to see if Joan wakes up and in what state -- according to the source, the closer she gets to complete consciousness, the more tests they can conduct.
As for the life or death decision that may need to be made for Joan, the family source says that everyone -- including Melissa -- "knows how Joan would want it."
"We won't be having this conversation a week from now. If this is the decision to be made, the decision will be made swiftly, but not easily," the source says.
And while the family waits to see if Joan will recover, rumors that they're considering a lawsuit against the endoscopy clinic have begun to surface. However, that is the furthest thing on Melissa's mind.
"Melissa is in no condition to think about a lawsuit," the source says. "Melissa is not talking about that. Others are. Close friends are. But no one has said anything to Melissa. Melissa doesn’t have the bandwidth right now to think about that."
The Fashion Police judge was placed under a medically induced coma Thursday following a routine endoscopy, when not long after the procedure started, she stopped breathing and was then rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Melissa and her son Cooper flew to New York from Los Angeles Thursday.
"On behalf of my mother and our family, we are extremely grateful for all the love and support we've received. At this time she does remain on life support," Melissa said in her latest statement Tuesday. "I know my mother would be overwhelmed by the continued outpouring of kindness and I want to thank everyone for keeping us in their prayers."
