Modern Family star Sarah Hyland secured a restraining order against her 24-year-old ex boyfriend Matthew Prokop this past week, ET confirms.
A rep for Hyland, 23, issued a statement to ET, saying, "On September 19, 2014, Ms. Hyland obtained a Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order against Matthew Prokop. The documents filed speak for themselves. Out of respect for the court, the process and all parties, I have advised Ms. Hyland not to comment on the matter. We request that you respect the parties' privacy during this time."
Hyland and Prokop first began dating after an audition for High School Musical 3. They later went on to co-star in the Disney TV movie Geek Charming. The actress split from Prokop in August after dating for over five years.
Court papers allege that Prokop not only choked Hyland but also threatened to burn her house down. The papers go on to claim that Hyland also enlisted the help of her TV mom Julie Bowen to help peacefully end the relationship. Instead, when confronted, Prokop allegedly ran outside screaming.
According to the legal documents, Prokop allegedly began to verbally abuse Hyland in 2010. After their breakup, the papers claim that Prokop "bombarded" Hyland with "vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails."
Unfortunately, she isn't the only Modern Family star to become involved in controversy. Hyland's TV sister, Ariel Winter, was placed under the permanent guardianship of her 36-year-old sister Shanelle Gray back in May. This came after allegations that Ariel, 16, had "been the victim of ongoing physical abuse (slapping, hitting, pushing) and emotional abuse (vile name calling, personal insults about minor and minor's height, attempts to 'sexualize' minor, deprivation of food, etc.) for an extended period of time by the minor's mother [Chrisoula 'Crystal' Workman]..." Ariel's mother has denied the allegations.
"It's all untrue, it's all untrue," Crystal declared to People
in 2012. "I have my doctor's letter that my daughter's never been abused. ... I have stylists' letters that she's never been abused."
Domestic violence has been at the forefront of the social consciousness after NFL player Ray Rice was accused of abusing his now-wife. Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews spoke with ET about what he thought of the shocking news report:
