The 77-year-old is known around the world for his role as the lovable father Heathcliff Huxtable on the long-running sitcom The Cosby Show, and for having a stand-up comedy career that spans five decades. However, beginning in 2004, various claims of sexual assault and date rape began being leveled against Cosby.

Cosby has never been charged in any criminal case regarding any of these accusations, and through attorneys has repeatedly denied that any of the allegations are true. Cosby himself briefly addressed the claims, telling Florida Today, "I know people are tired of me not saying anything, but a guy doesn't have to answer to innuendos."

To bring clarity to a complex series of troubling accounts, this timeline is arranged in chronological order based on the years of the alleged incidents.

WATCH: Bill Cosby Charged in 2004 Sexual Assault Investigation

In December 2015, Cosby was arraigned on one charge of aggravated indecent assault in connection to Constand's accusation. The charge is considered a second degree felony and carries a maximum penalty of 5-10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

Cosby's bail was set at $1 million with additional conditions of surrendering his passport and having no contact with the alleged victim. He posted $100,000 (10 percent of the bail, as required) and was released.

This is the first criminal charge against Cosby, after more than 50 women have accused him of drugging and/or sexually assaulting them. He has denied all wrongdoing.

Cosby's attorneys gave a statement to ET, saying, "The charge by the Montgomery County District Attorney's office came as no surprise, filed 12 years after the alleged incident and coming on the heels of a hotly contested election for this county's DA during which this case was made the focal point. Make no mistake, we intend to mount a vigorous defense against this unjustified charge and we expect that Mr. Cosby will be exonerated by a court of law."

Since the recent rape allegations, Cosby's upcoming NBC show was killed, The Cosby Show reruns have been pulled from TV Land and Netflix has postponed the comedian's stand-up comedy special.

Cosby has never been criminally charged for any of these allegations and has universally denied all claims.

The comedian's lawyer also responded to Janice Dickinson's rape allegations directly, calling them "a lie."
