Sam made headlines in 2014 when he became the first openly gay man to be drafted by the NFL, and was even congratulated by President Barack Obama for his historic journey. Sam was later cut by the St. Louis Rams, who drafted him, and was briefly on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.

The former All-American defensive end and his fiance were snapped atop St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City in Friday's tweet.
"Thank you for saying yes," Sam wrote in the caption.

Sam and Cammisano also made headlines at the time Sam was drafted. ESPN broadcasted the two celebrating the news with a kiss.
The couple reportedly became engaged while vacationing in Europe during Sam's 25th birthday.
