While Bobbi Kristina Brown's family remains hopeful that she'll recover, cardiologist Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum offers some insight as to why the 21-year-old is still on a ventilator.

Dr. Steinbaum, the Director of Women's Heart Health of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, is not one of Bobbi Kristina's doctors but has experience on similar cases. The medical expert tells ETonline that while it won't hurt Bobbi Kristina to stay on the ventilator, it is an indication that she's not getting better -- despite what her family has said.

Bobbi Kristina was put on a ventilator and placed into a medically induced coma after she was discovered unresponsive in her bathtub on Jan. 31 by her boyfriend Nick Gordon and friend Max Lomas.

"It means the body is not able to operate on its own," Dr. Steinbaum explains. "Every day this goes on, the prognosis gets worse."

As for whether Bobbi Kristina can come out of this and experience her same quality of life as she had prior, the doctor says it's hard to say without more details. "All of us have heard of miracle stories," she says. "I think that's why we always have hope."

While Dr. Steinbaum expresses great concern for Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown's daughter, she understands that the family needs to keep the faith. "You never give up until you have to," she says, commenting on Bobbie Kristina's aunt and cousin saying that she is "getting better."

"You maintain hope until you have to accept the reality ...until medically there's nothing else that can be done."

"There is a stage of acceptance. I don't know where the family is at," Dr. Steinbaum adds. "Life is so precious and in the medical world we do everything we can."
