Ever since Kanye West and Kim Kardashian first got together, his influence over here style has always been noticeable. Most recently, the rapper conceptualized his wife’s GRAMMY look from head to toe, dressing her in a Jean Paul Gaultier haute couture gown straight off the runway.
“She was always my muse, now she’s become other designers’ muses,” West reveals in a new interview with Style.com in support of his Adidas Original Collection. “Or designers’ muses, because like I said, I don’t want to disrespect designers by calling myself a designer, I just think I have a vision of something that I want to do.”
Yet, from the moment the two started dating, the 37-year-old rapper says the fashion industry turned its back on him. “Fashion people were really opposed to the idea of reality stars,” West explains. He says that despite premiering two fashion lines, people in the industry were nonplussed by Kardashian’s presence.
That distance created between the rapper and his “somewhat friends” allowed him to finally “go to school,” spending his time honing his skills by re-tailoring other designers outfits from Kris Jenner’s home.
“And day by day by day, [Kim and I] learned, we got better,” West says. “We looked at the photographs together and she improved my style, we improved each other.”
