When MeBai the elephant was just 3 years old, she was taken from her mother, Mae Yui, and sold to give rides to tourists visiting Thailand. That was in 2011 and she hasn’t seen her mother since.

MeBai was too young to give rides, though, and started growing skinnier and weaker. Eventually, her owner sent her to the Elephant Nature Park for their adorably named “Pamper a Pachyderm” program.

“Me-Bai was nervous and wary of people when she first arrived [here], but she quickly learned that her new caretakers had no intention of abusing her in any way," the EPN wrote on their site.

Better still, the workers at the Elephant Nature Park began searching for Mae Yui. And they found her working in a “trekking camp” in a nearby village. With MeBai in tow, they made a three-day trek to reunite daughter with mother.

The Elephant Nature Park says they even convinced Mae Yui’s owner to retire her from trekking, and now they’re working to rehabilitate both elephants so they “can return to the wild and live free.”
