Joel Burger
, 24, and Ashley King, 23, met as kindergarteners in New Berlin, Ill. But it wasn’t until fifth grade that they realized their combined nickname was a real whopper (sorry).

The two had helped plan a school assembly and, as King recalled to The State Journal Register, “After the man was finished with his motivational speech, he asked the two fifth grade [student council] representatives to stand up.”

She continued, “As soon as he said, ‘Joel Burger and Ashley King,’ he started to laugh out loud and pronounced we were ‘Burger King’"

The name stuck and the two stayed friends, even going to homecoming and prom together, before they actually started dating in college. Now, they are engaged and will combine their last names, so they’ll officially be pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Burger-King.

“We have yet to escape the teasing,” King says. “But we have fully embraced our nickname.”

As is proven by their engagement announcement photo: Taken in front of a Burger King sign. (For the record, Burger didn’t propose to King at a Burger King. Missed opportunity, in our humble opinion.)

The teasing is probably a little easier to handle now that Burger King -- the chain -- has offered to pick up the tab for their wedding! After the couple’s engagement announcement went viral, a B.K. spokesperson Skyped the couple to congratulate them and surprise them with the big news.

"When we heard about the happy Burger-King couple, we felt an overwhelming urge to celebrate their upcoming marriage," Burger King spokesperson Eric Hirschhorn told State Journal. "On so many levels it felt like fate; they found each other and their story found us."

“All we ask in return is that they live happily ever after,” Burger King explained. “And maybe name their first child Chicken Fry.”

Here’s hoping that creepy Burger King guy with the mask doesn’t RSVP.

And here’s another adorable engagement story: A man proposed to his soon-to-be bride during a Q&A with Ryan Gosling!
