Last May, 8-year-old Alissa Sizemore was playing with her friends in her yard in Vernal, Utah when she ran out into the street and, according to local KSL-TV, a UPS truck ran over her foot.

She was rushed to the hospital, but the doctors couldn’t save her severed foot, and actually had to amputate her leg below the knee. "I just didn't want to give up," Alissa told People.

"Dancing has been my favorite thing since I was 4,” she continued. “I don't have part of my leg, but I can't let that stop me. I still want to dance."

So that’s exactly what she did: Alissa started dancing again in secret and, last summer, before she even got her prosthetic leg, she tried out for the dance team again.

The intention was for Alissa to just help out with music at PowerHouse Dance Studio for a while, but when she and her mom, Heather, got to auditions, "She handed me her crutches and said she was trying out,” Heather says.

“She hopped to the middle of the room and gave it her all,” she recalls. “She wasn't going to let anybody hold her back." Cut to nine months after losing her leg and Alissa was center stage again, performing a solo routine to “Try” by Colbie Caillat.

It almost didn’t happen though. The Sizemore's insurance didn’t cover the full costs of her prosthetic leg. So the town of Vernal rallied around them to help raise the funds.

In the meantime, Alissa did what she could in her wheelchair and then on her crutches to keep dancing. Last September, she got her new leg, which makes it all that more impressive that she was performing full routines a mere months afterwards.

"It was real hard losing my leg, because I love music and dancing so much," Alissa says. "Everybody came together to get me dancing again. All of the teachers helped me and I knew there was no way I was going to give up...I love that I can dance again."

She got a standing ovation after the dance and is now inspiring people everywhere through this video:
