Did Jake Gyllenhaal just go all Jaden Smith on us?

The 34-year-old actor covered Esquire UK's July issue in promotion of his upcoming film, Southpaw, but things very quickly took a turn for a higher plane of existence when discussing why he prepares so seriously for his movie roles.

"As an actor, it’s easy to become disconnected from reality," admits Jake. "But I can also spend five months in an environment that most people would never get access to. So, it’s actually a great way of engaging with the world."

That's when the guy who starred in Donnie Darko (but also Bubble Boy) decided to take our minds on a complete journey.

In case you're not quite prepared for your whole perspective to get Gyllenhaal-ed, we'll break up his following bits of wisdom a bit. You know, so you can get it.

"I believe deeply in the unconscious. That you literally accumulate the molecules of the space that you’re in," said Jake.

"We’re like 90 percent water, so naturally we are going to be affected by the moon when it’s full: If the sea is, why wouldn’t we be?" he continued.

"That seems scientific to me."

"So, if you spend enough time in whatever environment your character would exist in – the way I spent six months with police officers [preparing for his 2012 film End of Watch] – then the molecules of that environment must transfer somehow."

"And then you put it on screen, and people go, 'I feel something that I don’t normally feel.'"
