Ed Sheeran was honored at the American Institute for Stuttering's Free Voices Changing Lives Benefit Gala in NYC on Monday, where the 24-year-old singer shared how he overcame his stutter.
"I had a port-wine stain birthmark on my face that I got lasered off when I was very young; one day, they forgot to put the anesthetic on, and ever since then, I had a stutter," said Sheeran at the event hosted by actress Emily Blunt.
Oddly enough, the Thinking Out Loud
singer credits rapper Eminem with helping him overcome his stutter! As he tells ABC News
, Sheeran says it all started when his dad bought him the Marshall Mathers LP
at age 9.
"I learned every word of it back to front by the time I was 10," Sheeran recalled. “And he raps very fast and very melodically and very percussively and it helped me get rid of the stutter."
Even so, the best way to make it through, said Sheeran, is just to embrace what makes you different.
"Just be yourself. Embrace your quirks," he noted.
"Kids worry a lot about fitting in but the moment you stop trying to fit in is when stuff fits around you," Sheeran pointed out. "Everything you think is wrong with you is actually right with you because that makes you an individual and that makes you an even more interesting human."
Stutter or no stutter, you rock, Ed Sheeran!
