Jaden Smith's Reason for Wearing a Batman Costume to Kimye's Wedding Is Just as Weird as You'd Expect

By

Jaden Smith is finally explaining his penchant for dressing up like Batman, particularly when he first debuted the seemingly random costume at Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's wedding in May 2014.

The 16-year-old son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith later recycled the look when he went to prom last month.

"I wore the Batman suit to heighten my experience at the wedding and prom which was fun, but also at the wedding I felt as though I needed to protect everyone there and needed to have the proper gear to do so," he tells GQin a new interview. "I'm just expressing how I feel inside, which is really no particular way because every day it changes how I feel about the world and myself, but I like wearing super drapey things so I can feel as though I'm a super hero, but don't have to necessarily wear super hero costumes every day."

Wearing "super drapey things" might explain his choice to wear loose dresses -- like a striped Topshop design he wore in April, or the long black tunic over a white skirt he sported when he went to his prom with Hunger Games star Amandla Sternberg.

It certainly makes sense that his style icons are "Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Superman, and Kanye West." (Kanye also made headlines in 2013 for sporting a Givenchy skirt in concert.)

But Jaden claims he mostly just re-wears clothes if they're not too dirty.

"First I roll over on the bed I built for myself and look at the ground," he says about how he gets his outfits ready for the day. "If there are clothes I wore from the previous day and they're not too dirty, that's what I put on."

But how does he know he's "swerved too far" when it comes to dressing?

"Well you can get fined for swerving too hard so it's tough," he jokes. "People may come up to you and say, 'Can you not swerve so hard? I can't concentrate over here.' That’s a way to know you've swerved too hard, but there are so many others."
