"The last song that I recorded [for the new album] was called 'Father,'" Lovato tells Billboard. "I'm particularly excited for this song."

Lovato's estranged father lost his battle with cancer in 2013, and the singer previously tweeted thanks to her fans for their support in her time of need.

"I feel so humbled to have had so much support from my fans, friends, family and complete strangers... God bless you all, thank you so much," she wrote at the time.

Now, she's channeling her emotions into her music.

"I get very, very honest about the passing of my dad," she said in the Sept. 1 interview. "My fans expect me to be honest, [but] what I think that people in general aren't going to expect is the way that I sing the song. I took it more to a soulful, gospel kind of sound, and it's the song that I think I might be most proud of on the album."

Lovato's new album, Confident, is due out this October. Last week, the 23-year-old unveiled the super sexy album cover, in which she strikes a pose in black panties and a skin-tight, shiny black top.

"The album is called 'Confident,'" she told ET on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards. "And I wanted something that was going to best represent the album title, where I'm at today and the music."
