"I mainly did it for myself," the 17-year-old actress said at the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party at an estate in Beverly Hills on Friday, Oct. 2. "Yes, I had many comments, and it bothered me that that was kind of what I was known for. And that was kind of what people were commenting on my photos. That bothered me, but it wasn't the main reason I did it."
According to Winter, public pressure and peer bullying has led many young girls to feel bad about their bodies, and to seek out plastic surgery.
"There's so much in the media [telling people] you have to look a certain way," Winter said. "People feel so pressured that if they don't look this way they're not going to be beautiful."
In Winter's case, she's happy with her decision, telling ET, "I just feel so amazing with all the support I've received. It's been a wonderful year for me."
Winter shared that she felt a great deal of support and love from her Modern Family co-star Sofia Vergara, whose been helping Winter for years.
"She's amazing," Winter gushed. "The way she dresses is beautiful. She knows how to dress for her body and she's just really wonderful. She gives me so many helpful tips, and before I had my reduction we talked about like, 'Where do I get my bathing suit from?' and, 'What we can do?' So, she was really great and really supportive."
She's also received a lot of support from her boyfriend of two years Laurent Gaudette.
"He's wonderful," Winter said. "You know when you're in an awesome relationship and you're both really supportive it's awesome."
