The exes were "back where it all started" in the recording studio on Saturday.

Is it possible for exes to stay friends? It appears that Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger are testing that theory.

A month after the "Complicated" singer announced she and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger had separated, the former couple, who tied the knot in July 2013, were in the recording studio together working on new music.

The 31-year-old pop singer posted a pic of herself in a cowboy hat and a guitar to Instagram on Saturday, writing: "YeeHaw! Writing with Chad today."

Lavigne also shared a photo of Kroeger, 40, holding a guitar with the caption: "Back where it all started ..."

Lavigne and Kroeger previously released the single "Let Me Go" in 2013, so it really is a return to the mutual love that drew them together.

Lavigne announced her split from Kroeger on Sept. 2, where she made it clear that the couple still shared a deep love. "Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments," she said. "We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other."
